It looks absolutely flat in the background, but at the horizon, the ground literally disappears and the landscape changes to a series of deep gorges that are totally impassible by vehicle. If fact, Jones and Piccard were incredibly lucky as they landed on a relatively small and flat plateau that was completely surrounded by jagged rocks and deep wadis.
