There were no previous vehicle tracks on this plateau. Even the Long Range Desert Group, of Western Desert WWII fame, had avoided it. We did make use of one of their roads at a lower level to reach this point, however. We had to climb two escarpments in the process and passed by the vehicle tracks of the Egyptian Reconaissance Department, who had been forced to turn back after the first escarpment. Most of the tires that you see above were filled with sand. New tires were flown in by helicopter later that day.
